In 2007 highway diesel vehicles in the United States where mandated by federal law and to use DPF’s (diesel particulate filters) in the United States. Also, all off-road, heavy equipment & farm machinery and industrial engines in 2012 over a specified horsepower, (25 HP & above) was also mandated by Federal Law. During normal operation the DPF’s do a superb job in cleaning the exhaust contaminants (NOX) from diesel engines but they definitely will create some problems. One major problem is that the DPF’s may cause fuel dilution in the engine oil (especially in the Ford 6.7L) which Ford changed in 2024. Some of the problems are excessive fuel consumption, excessive back pressure in the exhaust system which limits your performance which can cause your engine to shut down or go into limp mode when the DPF get plugged. The main reason is so they will not shut off or go to limp mode during operations!! It is also illegal to remove from your highway vehicle.
